Dear Southern AZ Senior Pride Supporters,
This is our fiscal year-end appeal to the community. But first we want you to know just how important your donations to Senior Pride are and what we do with your generous contributions.
To bring community together, we sponsored a cultural series, beginning in October 2016 with our “Words of Wisdom” Poetry Reading. TC Tolbert (now the Tucson Poet Laureate) was the featured poet, joined by talented local elder poets. In spring 2017, we presented two major community events: We sponsored LGBTQI historian Lillian Faderman at the Tucson Festival of Books for two presentations and our Senior Pride table stood out for showing the only Rainbow flag on the grounds.
We also screened “Coming Out Under Fire,” about LGBT veterans of World War II. The presentation by filmmaker Arthur Dong and the stories of two local veterans were community building, informative, and impressive. Both events were well attended. We plan more cultural events in the future.
On an ongoing basis, we produce a monthly newsletter, host interesting speakers at monthly General Meetings, have a lively and current website and Facebook page, and offer a monthly potluck.
This year we started new programs: we co-sponsor a weekly LBTQ Women’s Grief Group, a monthly Elder Circle, trainings with Project Visibility and a new bi-weekly LGBTQI Caregiver’s Group facilitated by the Alzheimer’s Association. On June 3 we will co-sponsor the second End of Life Planning Workshop with Interfaith Community Services. We are active in the Elder Alliance, the GLBT Chamber of Commerce, and the Neighbors Care Alliance (Pima Council on Aging).
Our biggest news is that we are currently establishing the infrastructure for our newest program: Southern Arizona Senior Pride Community Cares Program–Tucson. The goal is to end isolation among LGBTQI elders. Southern Arizona Senior Pride will create a friendly visits and phone call program that addresses social needs of LGBTQI elders (55 and older) and people with disabilities who are at home or living in a care community. We are very excited to bring this program to our community. Look for a volunteer training in October and more information over the next few months.
We hope you are impressed and will continue to support Senior Pride with your generous donations. Senior Pride has a vital role in Southern AZ as the LGBTQI older adult population continues to grow, along with needs. We depend on your financial support to sustain and expand our programs and services.
