Speakers Series: LGBTQI+ Arts History in Tucson: Lesbian Looks and the Public Library

October 19, 2021 @ 3:00 pm 4:30 pm

Our LGBTQI+ community wouldn’t be as rich without the arts.

Seeds for the current landscape were planted by two groups: Lesbian Looks and the Public Library’s LGBTQ Services Committee. For more than two decades these groups have cultivated access to LGBTQ arts in Tucson through innovative programs. Where would we be without them? What can we learn from their vibrant roles in living history?

Launched in 1993, Lesbian Looks was the first public program of the Institute for LGBT Studies at the University of Arizona. They showcase cutting edge features, shorts, documentaries, experimental films and new media works not otherwise available to Tucson audiences. Lesbian Looks has presented over two hundred fifty films to audiences drawn from campus and the Tucson community, and featured panel discussions on topics ranging from breast cancer to homeless youth to Israeli-Palestinian politics, LGBTQ refugee resettlement, trans identity, borders and immigration, and queer history.

Formed in 1997, the LGBTQ+ Services Committee has committed itself to providing welcoming, inclusive opportunities for everyone. It began with a passionate group of staff dedicated to upholding the Library’s mission and the Library Users Bill of Rights, and best serving Southern Arizona’s LGBTQ+ library users. From LGBTQ+ author talks to the monthly Rainbow Reads queer reading circle, the LGBTQ+ Services Committee of the Public Library has been building programs and media collections locally for 25 years.

Join us as Bev Seckinger of Lesbian Looks and Toby Wehner of the Pima County Public Library’s LGBTQ+ Services Committee share a look at the struggles and highlights their organizations have faced.
