SOUTHWEST PREMIERE of feature length documentary film: REEL IN THE CLOSET
About 350 people attended the SASP Community Forum at the Tucson Jewish Community Center to attentively view the film REEL IN THE CLOSET and archival interviews with local LGBT community members. In addition, Serena Worthington from SAGE (Services and Advocacy for Gays, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Elders) discussed current research on issues confronting LGBT seniors.
Stu Maddux, REEL IN THE CLOSET filmmaker, was present to answer questions about the making of the film, crafted from home movies from past decades of hidden LGBT culture. Joseph Howell, director of development for the of the University of Arizona Institute for LGBT Studies, spoke about the Arizona Queer Archives. To add to the excitement, 25 organizations, some who were sponsors, had tables of information about programs, services and resources.

Message from Lavina Tomer:
Our event on February 7, 2016, “Our Legacy and Our Future: A Community Forum for LGBT Elders and Allies” was a great success! We were incredibly pleased by the turnout of both attendees and providers, by the excellent questions and interactions and by our special guests. Throughout the afternoon, we heard a lot about the importance of storytelling as a tool for advocacy and education. In her remarks, Serena Worthington made a compelling case for why we need to hear your experiences as LGBT people, allies, providers, and advocates – and SAGE is now offering you the opportunity to share YOUR story.
What is your experience as an LGBT consumer or advocate? Do you encounter welcoming services and support? Have you ever been met with resistance or discrimination based on your or another person’s sexual orientation or gender identity? Do you have a loved one or friend who has experienced discrimination? Have you ever received an unexpectedly LGBT inclusive and warm welcome? If you are a provider, what motivates you to assure that LGBT older adults receive an inclusive and warm welcome?
What’s your story? Please take a moment to tell us:
